Oklahomans Shocked by Extra Tariff Fees Added to International Purchases

Some Oklahoma shoppers say they are being blindsided by extra tariff related charges appearing only after they have already paid for their orders and in some cases after the packages were already on the way. A report by News On 6 highlighted consumers who believed they had covered the full cost up front only to later discover added fees tied to international shipping.

One shopper said she ordered LED name lights paid for the items and shipping and later learned the package was coming from overseas. When it arrived it came with an added bill of nearly $30.

Shipping companies say they do not control the tariffs themselves. UPS stated that customs duties and tariffs are set by the federal government and that responsibility for payment depends on how the shipment was arranged by the seller or shipper.

In plain terms that means the buyer can still end up holding the bag if those costs were not covered ahead of time. Bobby Brown a local boba tea business owner said to the Oklahoma Gaslight he ordered a machine from China and ended up paying about $150 in tariff fees.

“I thought tariffs were a good thing. Now I feel kind of lied to. We order supplies from China often. If these fees don’t go away it will be an issue soon,” he said.
