President Donald Trump is now losing support of the National Rifle Association and other pro gun advocacy groups following the killing of Alex Pretti. Gun rights organizations criticized the way ICE is operating saying lawful gun ownership alone cannot justify deadly force.
“This is dangerous and wrong. We need a full investigation and stop demonizing law abiding citizens,” said an NRA representative in a public statement.
Gun Owners of America (GOA) also criticized the remarks and signaled a break with Trump over the issue. The group said, “Federal agents are not ‘legally justified’ in shooting concealed carry licensees who approach while lawfully carrying a firearm. The Second Amendment protects Americans’ right to bear arms while protesting.”
The NRA and GOA are not alone. Republican lawmakers and conservative figures have voiced similar concerns dropping support for Trump.
The Second Amendment is a constitutional right. It does not justify the killing of American citizens.
NRA and Gun Owners of America have shown that being Republican does not mean being pro Trump. A person can support conservative values and the Second Amendment without defending the killing of American citizens. Party loyalty does not require silence, it requires standing up when things are not right.
