How does someone go from plumber to Trump’s pick for secretary of homeland security? In MAGA world, the answer is simple. Loyalty matters more than competence, performance matters more than preparation, and shameless flattery can take a man farther than credentials ever will.
Mullin never became an academic success, never built a record as a policy thinker, and never showed the kind of intellectual depth one would expect from someone being considered to lead one of the most important security agencies in the country.
Before politics fully consumed his public image, Mullin also tried to make a name for himself in mixed martial arts. That effort never became anything. In politics it is more of the same.
Mullin’s roots in the plumbing business became central to his political mythology. He has long framed himself as a working man who understands real America because he comes from outside the elite class. As dignified as it is, how does plumbing experience prepare someone for disaster response, cybersecurity, and the enormous machinery of the Department of Homeland Security? Running a plumbing company and running DHS are not remotely the same thing.
His political climb was not powered by brilliance or a record of serious legislative distinction. It was powered by greed and a willingness to say what the MAGA base wants to hear. Since Trump returned to office, Mullin has increasingly functioned less like an independent senator and more like a made for TV loyalist whose main qualification is public obedience.
Trump did not elevate Mullin because the country was begging for his expertise on homeland security. He elevated him because Mullin has become the kind of politician Trump values most: aggressively loyal, combative, and poorly educated.
Republicans, Democrats, and even those with no interest in politics. We all are complicit in Mullin’s rise to power. Proud old time Republicans should be ashamed that someone as unqualified as Mullin became your representative. Is this truly the best your party has to offer?
The Democratic Party prides itself on its intellect and higher understanding of politics. Couldn’t we find a better candidate to beat Mullin in the polls?
And all non voters who have no interest in politics. When will you understand your future depends on it? Don’t you see your apathy for politics becomes complicit when someone like Mullin ascends to power? Do you want to see the day we have a President Mullin?
Every single one of us is responsible for the disgrace Mullin is, and we share responsibility for whatever he will do. We need to do a better job advocating and showing up to vote. We have reached the lowest of the low. Please, do not let that happen again.
