Tulsa Scores Major Win as Project Anthem Expansion Is Delayed After Public Pressure

Tulsa residents won an important victory this week after city leaders moved to slow the spread of large data center development and put new pressure on the expansion of Project Anthem in east Tulsa.

The city is now taking a harder look at whether these massive facilities truly belong under Tulsa’s current zoning rules. At the same time, the next major expansion step tied to Project Anthem has been delayed, giving residents and officials more time to question what this project could mean for nearby neighborhoods.

One of the biggest concerns is land use. City planning staff pushed back against the proposed expansion, arguing that more industrial growth in the area could come at the expense of future neighborhood development.

In other words, officials are beginning to ask whether Tulsa should keep sacrificing residential growth and community space for giant industrial projects with uncertain long term benefits for ordinary residents.

Project Anthem has not been killed, and the broader fight is far from over. But this week showed that Tulsa is no longer willing to wave these projects through without harder questions.
