Share

Last night, you were accused of barbaric practices. Your last names, part of your identity and a source of pride, were butchered, mocked, and laughed at. You were told that no matter how hard you try to belong, no matter your effort or contribution, you will always be seen as second class citizens. You were told that parking lots and sewage mattered more than your right to a peaceful place of prayer.

Last night, we cried together. We were angry together. But we also found a spark of new hope. Despite the ignorance and bigotry present in some of the statements made, there were also Oklahoma natives who spoke in the name of decency.

“The one who writes this message follows no religion, but is bound by the belief that all humans are equal under the sun. I am a Latino man, and I stand with you.”

Much of the hatred we witnessed last night is rooted not in evil, but in fear. Take some comfort in knowing that the generations shaped by senseless propaganda are slowly fading. Last night, it was clear to me that a new generation is rising. Despite the frustration, I felt hopeful.

Seeing such bright young minds speak on behalf of progress and kindness makes me believe that change is coming. I believe we will see a future where we can coexist in peace. Please do not lose hope. We are with you all the way. The Oklahoma Gaslight will continue to stand with you.
