Mustang Public Schools suspended 122 students after they allegedly left class to participate in a walkout to protest ICE. The walkout took place during regular instructional hours. District officials said the students were disciplined for unexcused absences and for leaving campus without permission.
The demonstration was organized by students and occurred on school grounds and nearby areas. Students held signs and chanted slogans related to immigration enforcement and federal policy. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin RINO Stitt publicly supported the district’s decision, stating that students should remain in class during the school day.
Suspending students for peaceful walkouts penalizes our fundamental right to civic dissent.
The Supreme Court has held that students do not lose their constitutional rights at the school gate. Labeling protesting as truancy is a direct penalty for political expression.
The fact that students were punished for exercising their First Amendment right sets a concerning precedent: comply, or you will be punished.
